Why Your ‘HIIT’ Workouts Are Full of Empty Promises

Do the Apple Watch Series 12’s New Health Features Live Up to the Hype?

Peloton just launched three new treadmills: the Tread Flex, its first folding treadmill, plus the Tread Vision and Tread+ Vision. Together they span a wide range, from a space-saving $2,195 machine for walkers to a $6,695 slat-belt powerhouse built for elite athletes and Hyrox competitors.

As with nearly every other market right now, there’s a big focus on intelligence and personalization. Peloton claims the new hardware is “smarter,” with features like a movement-tracking camera that can analyze your running form. The software goes further, with features that adapt to how you actually train, and what’s really exciting is that many of them are coming to Peloton’s existing treads too. I got a sneak peek at the lineup at Peloton Studios New York last week. Here’s what I learned about Peloton’s newest lineup of treadmills.

Tread Flex ($2,195)

For most people, the Flex is the main headline here. It folds down to save roughly 50% of floor space, and folded, Peloton reps told me it’s shorter than a Peloton Bike. A two-step cylinder release lowers the deck gradually, and a safety locking pin keeps it secure when upright. Caster wheels make it easy to reposition, and the swivel screen lets you move from the belt to floor workouts like strength, yoga, and stretching. It’s also quiet: Peloton says it runs at 70 dB at 12.5 mph, its top speed, with no one on the belt. It’s best suited to walkers, hikers, and low-impact cardio fans.

Tread Vision ($3,495)

This is a top-to-bottom upgrade of Peloton’s tread, with improvements at nearly every touchpoint:

  • A 23.8″ swivel screen with Sonos-tuned speakers and an integrated cooling fan

  • A movement-tracking camera that powers Run Analysis and connected strength workouts

  • New deck cushioning with internal dampeners to reduce joint impact

  • A redesigned tray for your phone, tablet, and water bottle

  • New Jump Buttons that take you to the next or previous whole-number speed or incline in a single tap

Peloton pitches it at mixed households with varied goals: walkers, joggers, runners, and strength trainers.

Tread+ Vision ($6,695)

The Tread+ Vision is Peloton’s premium performance treadmill, built for high-mileage training and elite athletes. Its rubberized slat-belt deck rides on a ball-bearing system designed to return energy to your stride. It includes everything on the Tread Vision, including the movement-tracking camera for Run Analysis and connected strength workouts, plus the Jump Buttons, and adds exclusive Sled Mode and Free Mode (more on those below). Peloton says it’s best for performance runners, endurance athletes, and Hyrox competitors.

Peloton’s new software features

For me, the bigger news is the launch of a slew of promising new software features. These are the ones that most caught my attention, especially because they’re coming to legacy devices too, as long as the hardware can support them.

Run Analysis uses the movement-tracking camera for AI-powered form analysis. It measures cadence, vertical oscillation, stride length, and vertical ratio, then gives you a Running Efficiency Score from 1 to 100 after each workout, along with personalized tips. It needs a one-time camera calibration, and the camera runs silently in the background with no live display. It’s available on the Tread Vision, Tread+ Vision, and CTS Tread+, but not in Bootcamp, Warm Up, Cool Down, or ReRun workouts.

IQ Pace Targets are coming to all tread hardware. It analyzes your recent running to recommend a personalized pace range, kicking in after about 10 running workouts and adapting as your fitness changes. On-screen Shortcuts line up instructor cues with your own targets, so a single tap changes your speed or incline. Personalization must be enabled.

ReRuns brings your real-world outdoor routes to the tread. It syncs past runs and walks from the Peloton app or a connected smartwatch, and Auto-Incline follows the actual elevation profile. If you haven’t saved any run outdoors, there’s a preloaded library that includes TCS New York City Marathon route segments and select past Peloton Run Club routes. Location services must be on during outdoor workouts.

Sled Mode is for the Hyrox crowd and is coming to all Tread+ hardware. It emulates the sled push with software-controlled resistance from 30 to 300 lbs against the slat belt. Press the “Free Mode” button, set your sled weight with the adjuster, and the belt is driven by your own stride. There are dedicated instructed Sled Mode classes, and it’s also accessible in Just Run.

Heart rate workouts are Zone 2-based, non-instructed sessions guided by heart rate rather than speed or incline. They’re available in Just Run and Entertainment, with real-time on-screen target zone guidance that adapts to keep you in the right zone. You’ll need a connected heart rate monitor, smartwatch, or wearable. They work across all Peloton cardio hardware (Tread, Bike, and Row).

For all the new software features I list above, you’ll need All-Access Membership—except heart rate workouts, which are also available on App+ and App.
