“We are deeply saddened by the tragic motor vehicle collision involving one of our ambulances today,” spokesperson for Medavie Health Services, Samantha Hughes, wrote to CBC in an email on behalf of Island EMS.

New Brunswick RCMP reported via Facebook at 9:35 a.m. AT that there had been a collision, and that part of the route between the Confederation Bridge and the community of Melrose in the municipality of Strait Shores was closed to traffic.

The statement by Island EMS did not mention whether anyone died, or who was on board.

“Our thoughts are with the families, loved ones, colleagues, and everyone affected by this heartbreaking incident. We are providing support to our staff during this incredibly difficult time.”

RCMP have not provided any additional information so far about the collision. The area is about 12 kilometres southwest of the bridge. The road has since been re-opened to traffic.

“The circumstances surrounding the collision are under investigation,” Island EMS continued in its email.

“Out of respect for those involved and the investigative process, we are unable to provide further details at this time.”

Jodi Boland, who lives on Route 16 near Upper Cape Road, said she saw smoke from her home’s window. When she went outside, she said she saw two ambulances, two fire trucks and “a lot” of police cars.

Codiac RCMP spokesperson Cpl. Luc Picard told CBC in an email just after 11 a.m. that police will provide more information when they can.
