Stormy weather is bearing down on Toronto just as the city prepares to host its second game of FIFA World Cup 2026.

Environment Canada warned Tuesday that Toronto will see strong winds, up to 40 millimetres of rain and the risk of severe thunderstorms.

CBC meteorologist Colette Kennedy said the game should start off fine, but the chance of rain will increase as the game enters its second half, and it might be a wet walk out of Toronto Stadium for the 40,000-plus fans expected at the Ghana versus Panama match.

The rainfall is expected to be heaviest overnight, Kennedy said.

Thunderstorms and heavy rain already forced the City of Toronto to shut down the opening of its FIFA fan zone at nearby Fort York last week.

Environment Canada’s weather warning was issued across the Greater Toronto Area, from Halton Hills to Toronto to Oshawa.

It said more information or warnings may be issued once the low pressure system’s path becomes certain.

Wind gusts in the evening will range from 30 to 50 kilometers per hour southeast and then change in the morning up to 60 kilometres per hour, said the agency’s forecast.

It’s a low of 15 C Wednesday and a high of 23 C on Thursday with a humidex of 26.
