A tornado warning has been issued for a part of southeastern Manitoba as a severe thunderstorm rolls through, Environment and Climate Change Canada says.
Forecasters are tracking a severe thunderstorm that might be producing a tornado, the weather agency said in the warning, issued shortly before 7 p.m. CT.
It’s a “very dangerous and potentially life-threatening” situation, the warning says.
Damaging winds, large hail and locally intense rainfall are also possible.
The thunderstorm is moving east over Lowe Farm, which is in the rural municipality of Morris, at 25 kilometres per hour, the warning says.
The communities of Morris, Aubigny and Rosenort are impacted by the warning.
People in the area are advised to take immediate cover in a basement, interior room or a sturdy shelter if threatening weather approaches.
Those without shelter should lie in a low spot and protect their heads from flying debris.
Anyone out on the water when threatening weather approaches should return to shore and seek shelter if possible, or move away from the tornado’s path to escape.
The weather agency also says people in water should wear a life-jacket, lie face down and protect their heads.
