At approximately 10 a.m. on Thursday, officers were called to the 4300 block of 14th Street N.W. Upon arrival, police located and searched a stopped vehicle. A man nearby was taken into custody.

Staff Sgt. Darren Smith said the children are believed to be under the age of 10.

The deaths are considered suspicious and the homicide unit is investigating, Smith said.

“It was very shocking,” Smith said. “This is very hard on our officers. Our officers are human and this is heartbreaking for everyone.”

Smith said police don’t yet know the relationship between the man and the children.

It will be up to the medical examiner to reveal the sex of the children and their cause of death, he explained.

The area around 14th Street N.W. is closed while police continue their investigation.
