A father-and-son duo from central Labrador are donating some of the proceeds from winning a gruelling 3,400-kilometre snowmobile race to a children’s hospital.

In February Randy and Sebastian Malleck — hailing from Sheshatshiu Innu First Nation in central Labrador — won Cain’s Quest, which comes with a $100,000 prize.

Randy Malleck said they donated approximately $10,000 of their winnings to the IWK Health Centre in Halifax because his daughter spent time there for treatment in 2020.

“Easy to give [the prize money] away. But we’re not here for the money. Like we say in the race before, we are here with the trophy,” Malleck told CBC Radio’s Labrador Morning.

He said the donation will go towards helping ill children.

The father-and-son duo, known as Team 99, also won Cain’s Quest in 2024. That year, they made a donation to the Janeway Children’s Health and Rehabilitation Centre in St. John’s.

Malleck said it was another family connection that inspired the donation, as his daughter and granddaughter were both born there.

Malleck, alongside his son, was speaking with Labrador Morning while at Happy Valley-Goose Bay-based Saga Enterprises, which sponsored Team 99.

General manager Sheryl Colbourne said she dropped off the donation on behalf of the Mallecks on a recent trip to Halifax with her father, company owner Dorman Anderson.

“So that was very heartwarming,” said Colbourne.

She said it was very well received by the IWK, adding she was told the hospital doesn’t receive donations of this kind very often.

Candace Anderson, who is with Saga Enterprises’ accounts payable and receivable, said it’s been amazing to see the pair win the race twice.

“The guys are great, they’re a great team. A father-son duo, they communicate a lot together and we’re just happy to be a part of it. It’s all about Randy and Sebastian. Team 99 all the way,” said Anderson.
