The derailment was reported by police Monday morning, near Glendale Avenue and Keele Street.

There are no reported injuries or fires, according to CN Railway media relations advisor Michelle Hannan, who also said Monday afternoon CN crews and local first responders are at the scene.

The derailment could be seen from the Welland Canals Trail. A white granular substance had spilled out from one overturned car.

Hannan said polyethylene, a “non-dangerous good” used in the manufacturing of household plastics had spilled. She said there’s no danger to the public.

The cause of the derailment is unknown and under investigation, she said.

Niagara police said Monday morning there was a train blocking Glendale Avenue near Keele Street. Later in the morning, police said the road blockage had been cleared.

Metrolinx said midday Monday GO train services are suspended between Confederation GO in Stoney Creek and Niagara Falls GO “due to a freight train issue.” That means service to St. Catharines GO is also suspended.

People can board the route 12 GO bus to Burlington GO for the train connection, Metrolinx said.

“It is strongly encouraged that non-essential travel is reconsidered, as bus service is limited.”

More to come.
