A widespread Bell telecommunications outage is affecting calls in Newfoundland and Labrador, including some people trying to call 911 and other non-emergency police phone lines.
In a social media post, Bell Aliant said customers may not be able to make voice calls, including to emergency services.
“We are working to restore service as quickly as possible. If you require emergency assistance, please go directly to the nearest fire station, police station or hospital emergency department,” reads the statement.
The Royal Newfoundland Constabulary says its non-emergency telephone reporting line is unavailable, but says its 911 system isn’t affected.
Newfoundland Power is also affected.
“Customer service and emergency phone lines are currently unavailable,” reads a social media post from the utility.
Newfoundland Power says people can call 709-685-5078 for power outages, downed lines, or other electricity system emergencies only.
The City of St. John’s says its 311 service is not available to Bell customers, either.
