Police in Brockville, Ont., have charged a 17-year-old with murder after the bodies of three people were found inside a home in the eastern Ontario city on Thursday.

In a Facebook post, Brockville Police said they were called to a residence on Cartier Court at around 11:30 a.m., where they found the three victims.

According to Brockville Mayor Matt Wren, the victims were a mother and her two young daughters.

Officers received information that led them to a different address on the city’s outskirts, according to the police post. They found the youth there and took him into custody.

The accused appeared in court Friday and is charged with three counts of first-degree murder.

Police said the teen and the victims were known to one another and that it was not a random incident.

“We have to be honest with what we’re looking at here … three women killed in the place that they should have been safest,” Wren told CBC Radio’s Ontario Morning. “This is just an unspeakable tragedy.”

Brockville Police said the investigation is sensitive and complex and that they “recognize the profound impact this incident has on the families, loved ones and the community.”

The police service is holding a news conference in Brockville at 2 p.m. Friday.

Premier Doug Ford addressed the “tragedy in Brockville” during a news conference in Smiths Falls, Ont., on Friday.

“We’re working with local police, who will have our full support as they respond to this terrible event,” Ford said.

The teen remains in custody and is expected back in court on May 28. His identity is protected under the Youth Criminal Justice Act.
