A baby and toddler are dead after they were unable to be rescued from a burning house in Brazeau County, police said.
Breton RCMP received a call at 12:30 p.m. Thursday about a fire at a house along Township Road 482, according to an RCMP news release issued Friday afternoon. The property is just north of Breton, a village about 80 kilometres southwest of Edmonton.
When responding Mounties arrived, they learned a woman and two children were able to evacuate the home but that an infant and toddler were still inside, police said.
Firefighters worked on the fire, which has since been extinguished, but rescue attempts for the young children “were not possible,” police said.
Mounties found the baby’s body during the first search of the burned building. The child’s remains have been sent to the Office of the Chief Medical Examiner in Edmonton, police said.
The toddler was unaccounted for. But on Friday evening, police said their remains had also been found inside the home.
Officials are still investigating the fire’s cause.
