Up to 99 cm of snow is estimated to have fallen in the Green Bay-White Bay area since Christmas night, says Justin Boudreau, meteorologist with Environment Canada.

In western Newfoundland, an estimated 30 to 50 cm of snow came down— with as much as 100 cm in unpopulated higher terrain.

Winter storms made many roads impassible, closing large sections of highway on the Northern Peninsula and Labrador earlier Sunday.

While alerts have ended for large parts of the province, there are still winter weather warnings for parts of western Newfoundland, Nain and the Hopedale area

Hundreds of people in central Newfoundland woke up to no power Sunday morning. NL Hydro and Newfoundland Power crews have been working on outages as they happen, but continuing poor conditions have delayed restoration in some areas.

Driving is disrupted in several areas.

On the Northern Peninsula, Route 410 is closed from near Port Saunders to Plum Point.

In Labrador, Route 516 to Cartwright was closed Saturday morning, along with parts of Route 510. Those roads have since re-opened.

Travel is not recommended on parts of the west coast and central Newfoundland.

The weather warnings are forecast to end later on Sunday.

Boudreau says a warmer period is on the way this week, but more snow could be possible.

However, he said, “It’s probably the last major snowstorm of this year.”
