For almost 50 Sistema Toronto students, the summer will combine learning and fun in a safe environment on the picturesque shores of Lake Couchiching. Funding from the founders of the program will go towards their stay at the National Music Camp (NMC).
Robert and Ellen Eisenberg, founders of Sistema Toronto, have provided the funding for their stay at the summer music camp.
“Our students always return from camp with big smiles on their faces, stories to tell, and an eagerness to get back into their Sistema classes and show their friends and teachers everything they’ve learned,” says Shawn Earle, CEO of Sistema Toronto, in a statement. “From past camps, we saw that students came back more independent, confident, and connected.”
The National Music Camp was launched in 1965, and spreads across 125 acres of land that includes hills and fields, forests and sandy beaches on Lake Couchiching, in Simcoe County, Ontario. It provides top notch facilities, instructors, and activities.
Campers can also enjoy a wider range of non-musical activities from swimming and beach volleyball to arts and crafts, a climbing wall, waterskiing and wakeboarding, a water slide, biplane, tennis, basketball, and more.
It’s intended as a complete experience that includes fun along with intensive training.
Sistema Toronto is based on the principle that music can be an instrument of social change. The instrumental music education program is free to underserved school communities in Toronto. Sistema students learn in a group setting for 10 hours a week, developing social, teamwork, and problem solving skills along with their musical technique.
Sistema Toronto is a safe space for students to explore their creativity and more, and the National Music Camp extends that experience to the summer.
Sistema Toronto is hoping to raise an additional $15,000 to complete the funding for as many students as possible.
