Takahiro Hayashi sets it off with a loose style reminiscent of a 90s Quim Cardona while Barry Mansfield has the last part, he just turned 39. What’s your excuse? After you soak it all in, we got some words from filmmaker Phil Marshall below the video.
“Melbourne has always been a great city for bringing together skaters from all over the globe. Over recent years, a wave of Japanese skaters hit the scene with their creative approach, and I felt it was time someone captured their unique take on spots. What started as an idea for a montage slowly developed into a full video—especially once Barry Mansfield (a Perth legend who just turned 39!) started linking up.
Every weekend, Barry would hop on a 2-hour train ride from Castlemaine and get busy stacking clips. Surrounded by reinvigorated energy and creativity, I got inspired. I picked up a VX1000 and MK1—nostalgic tools for a kid who grew up skating in the early 2000s.
Massive shoutout to Brett Roydan and Dean Charnley for showing me the ways with the VX and contributing footage. One year later, Field Guide came together.”—Phil Marshall
“A short VX1000 video, filmed in Naarm, 2025.

Excellent Super 8 work in here. This whole video has fun vibes and makes you want to go skate. These dudes all rip. Brett Royden’s nollie into that crook off the top is a wild one.

And damn, once again, Barry rips. Speaking of dudes who still got it—always great to see Morgan Campbell on board. Cheers, mates!
