Thailand’s a wild place if you’ve never been—it’s hot as balls, the skate spots aren’t easy to find, but it’s dirt cheap. It’s fun! The locals are nice, it’s very unlike the West, and the cities and the beaches are world’s apart. Bangkok is a good “homebase,” meaning you can fly in there, get your bearings, but then you’ll quickly want to hit an island run down south to Phuket, the Phi Phi islands, or Railay Beach.
When you see skate edits out of Thailand, just know these dudes sweated their asses off and spot searched in Tuk Tuks, on dragon boats (cruising on filthy water) and on the back of motorbikes to get to these locations. Austyn Gillette, Jake Anderson and the Former team never disappoint. Check out how they did it in the land of Muay Thai:
“”While others are ordering bottle service on yachts in Miami, we’re out here ordering plastic bottles filled with god-knows-what on some sketchy boat in Thailand, and honestly, I wouldn’t have it any other way. It’s on these scrappy trips that the magic really happens. Far from the niceties that turn your body to veal and push inspiration to the side.” — Austyn Gillette
