The Tafelmusik Baroque Summer Institute offers intense training for artists in Baroque music and style. But, there’s something for audiences too: four free concerts during the Tafelmusik Baroque Summer Festival, which runs from June 16 to 28.

You’ll be able to experience both seasoned professionals and emerging artists in the concert series that opens and closes the festival.

“Our June concerts reflect the many facets of Tafelmusik’s musical personality, and showcase our love for chamber and orchestral music, choral music, and working with students,” says Cristina Zacharias, Artistic Co-Director, in a statement. “We look forward to each of these performances and to fostering the talents of future historical performance musicians to close out our thrillingly successful 46th season.”

The Tafelmusik Baroque Summer was established in 2002 for instrumentalists and vocalists as a two-week intensive workshop in Baroque performance practice. It’s now in its 24th iteration, and has welcomed over 1,500 participants from 64 countries.

“This is Tafelmusik giving back — making a gift to the world of early music. And this is Tafelmusik investing in the future of period performance, not just in Canada but internationally,” says Robert Hunter, Tafelmusik board member and former senior executive with Department of Canadian Heritage.

Opening Night (June 16)

Tafelmusik Baroque Orchestra and Chamber Choir, and British baritone Peter Harvey. Works by Bach, Telemann, Purcell, and Zelenka at Jeanne Lamon Hall, Trinity-St. Paul’s Centre, Tafelmusik’s home.

While the concert is free of charge, tickets are required to reserve your spot; see the link below.

Baroque Portraits (June 21)

TBSI faculty perform an informal chamber recital at Walter Hall, University of Toronto, 80 Queen’s Park, Toronto.

Admission is free and on a first-come, first-served basis. No registration or tickets are required.

TBSI Orchestras and Choirs (June 25)

Participants of TBSI will perform both orchestral and choral music at Walter Hall, University of Toronto.

Admission is free and on a first-come, first-served basis. No registration or tickets are required.

Grand Finale (June 28)

More than 100 musicians will be on stage, including TBSI participants and the Tafelmusik Baroque Orchestra and Chamber Choir at Grace Church on-the-Hill.

The concert is already sold out, however, more tickets may be released closer to the date. Admission is free, but tickets are required. General admission seating.

In addition to the Summer Institute free concerts, Tafelmusik will be offering three additional concerts, including performances at The McMichael Canadian Art Collection and Toronto Botanical Garden.

Motets: Bach as Muse (June 6)

Tafelmusik Chamber Choir
Directed by Ivars Taurins
Michael Unterman, cello
Charlotte Nediger, organ

Only eight of Bach’s motets survive to the modern day, but they were enormously influential to the composers who followed. The program includes choral works by Bach, Homilius, Mendelssohn, Brahms, Rheinberger, and Reger, along with movements from Bach’s suites for solo cello, performed by Tafelmusik’s Michael Unterman.

Mozart’s Kindred Spirits (June 5) at the McMichael Canadian Collection / (June 13) at the Toronto Botanical Gardens

Julia Wedman & Geneviève Gilardeau, violins
Brandon Chui & Patrick G. Jordan, violas
Michael Untermann, cello

We know that Mozart loved playing music with his friends. Tafelmusik musicians get together to perform his Quintet in C Major, along with music of the friends Mozart played with, including Johann Vanhal and Josef Mysliviček.
