RCMP say three heli-skiers were killed in an avalanche on Mount Knauss north of Terrace, B.C., in the province’s northwest on Sunday.

Terrace RCMP said in a statement that they received a report of an avalanche on the mountain’s Iridium Shoulder ski run just before 1:30 p.m. PT.

They say four heli-skiers were caught in the avalanche. One person was airlifted and taken to a hospital with serious injuries, according to police.

RCMP say the B.C. Coroners Service is now looking into the three deaths.

Avalanche Canada said the avalanche risk would be “considerable” in the alpine sections of northwest B.C. mountains on Monday.

The forecaster said that snowfall and strong southwest winds on Sunday may have formed layers of snow that will be “most reactive in wind affected terrain.”

Mount Knauss is located around 30 kilometres north of Terrace, and around 710 km northwest of Vancouver.

Earlier Monday, police in Atlin also reported a fatality  from an avalanche near Pleasant Camp and the Klehini River, near the B.C.-Alaska border.

Including the most recent fatalities, nine people have died in avalanches in B.C. since December 2025.

That includes a 23-year-old snowmobiler killed near Kootenay Pass on Feb. 28 and a professional snowboarder who died near Joffre Lakes Park just days earlier.
