Kelowna RCMP blocked off access to Knox Mountain, a park in a residential area near the city’s downtown core, after a wildfire was sparked Friday afternoon.
Police and the fire department also assisted hikers off the mountain.
Smoke was visible throughout the mountain and flames were visible from nearby homes.
High winds in the area were a concern, but crews managed to knock the flames down by 4:45 p.m. PT while remaining on the scene.
Police said they had received reports of a “suspicious person” in the area and are investigating.
Knox Mountain Park is Kelowna’s largest natural park, the city says, spanning 3.85 square kilometres just north of downtown.
The city conducted controlled burning in the area on Oct. 16.
