Everything you wanted to know about that famous white handrail but were afraid to ask: Mackenzie Eisenhour, aka Deadhippie, takes his incredible, several-thousand-hashtag-IG-page to the vlogging sphere. Skate Nerd Star Maps just hit Youtube for its inaugural show, and the first episode centers on none other than Los Angeles’ federal building, a hot bed of innovation and handrail firsts in the 80s and 90s. Watch on as Mackenzie tells it like it is. No war for heavy metal!
“Welcome to the Star Maps Show. For this inaugural pilot/beta test we take a look at skateboard history at the Westwood Federal Building in West Los Angeles—home to the first “big” handrail ever boardslid and much more. This is the video version of my Instagram account (@deadhippie), and my #skatenerdstarmaps project which began in 2014. My goal is to showcase historic skateboard locations and highlight the coverage and innovation that went down there. The infrastructure, architecture, colors, and even vegetation of these spots were burned into our brains after watching them over and over on VHS, DVD, in magazine photos and later on the web so my aim is to give a brief overview of the space as it relates to skateboarding and beyond and create a record for future generations while they still exist. Many of the spots I have covered over the past 11 years on Instagram have already been demolished or remodeled beyond recognition. I hope to showcase as many as possible here before they are gone. The production seeks to be as basic and no-frills as possible so forgive the glitches on audio and other technicalities. Let me know if I should create more of these. To date I have archived over 1770 spots on my Instagram and counting. Let me know which spots you might like to see covered next as video shows. All of this is a labor of love so in the parlance of YouTubers far and wide; like, comment, and subscribe if you enjoyed this breakdown and want to see more.”
