The Dern Brothers and Madars Apse recently went back to one of skateboarding’s most iconic schools—El Toro—to update their ‘Spot History’ from a few years back. They take a proper deep dive into not only the history of the famous set, but all the other random little gems the school has lurking in the shadows of The Bull.
I can appreciate that they added some of stranger tricks that have been done down the set, as well as a handful of “notable attempts”—some more known than others, ha—as well. It’s a harsh reminder that this cement beast has won many battles. Man, if only those stairs could talk. The stories they could tell…

They check in with Clive Dixon, Nick Merlino and Brandon Burleigh. They even talk about BMX dudes and that guy who jumped the set on his dirt bike. Like I said, this is a proper deep dive.
And it wouldn’t be a ‘Spot History’ episode if one of the brothers didn’t try and skate something gnarly, so of course Kanaan jumps down the 22-rail in the back of the school like he’s skating a flatbar or something.
Also, the fact that Kanaan did a selfie lipslide down El Toro—literally just holding his phone in his hand while successfully pulling the trick—is pretty unreal. I mean, there were so many clips that these dudes mentioned that I have to admit I forgot about (some real mind-melters), but that’s just outta control.

The Dern Brothers have been on a roll lately, whether they’re dropping rad videos like this on their growing YouTube channel or simply staying as busy as ever in the streets. Spot history videos like these take a lot of work, so I salute them for digging and making it happen.
Actually, want to watch something super fun (and insane)? Tap that post below. I’m telling you, these dudes are maniacs in the best way.

I can’t help but wonder if El Toro will one day come alive again, but it’s hard to say. Do we even want it to? I’ll leave that up for debate.
But you can’t deny the fact that it was an iconic make-or-break spot for decades. For that, we’re thankful.
